The Indian Premier League has been at the front of almost every cricket discussion in the past few months and the time has now come for this new innovation to finally start. There’s not a single cricket competition in the world where players can earn up to £100,000 a week for the six week tournament. This over takes the salaries of most Premiership footballers. The tournament itself looks set to reshape cricket. The stereotypical image for this tournament is somebody who likes to see the ball hit far and hard; somebody who likes to see the game quick and most importantly somebody who like’s to see the best players in the world play against each other. Many businesses have sponsored this event which as pumped even more many into the competition.
As you probably know the ECB has forbidden centrally contracted players from taking part in the event. Kevin Pieterson has voiced his disapproval of this statement vigorously in the past few weeks. In my opinion playing for your countries should be made a higher priority than playing in the IPL but I can’t see the ECB forbidding English players from playing in the Indian Premier League forever. Sometime in the not so distend future the lid will be lifted and we will be seeing English players playing.
The event is pulling more publicity in will the calibre of the players taking part. The IPL’s main threat so far has been the announcement of plans for an English Premier League; something which has truly shocked the cricketing world. At the end of the day this tournament is pulling in the crowds who enjoy the atmosphere of 20/20 cricket and who want to see the world best cricketers playing against each other. What ever happens this tournament looks like it’s going to shake the cricketing world.
